CHAPTER FOURTEEN

The image faded. Molly blinked but couldn’t see anything. Had she been dreaming? There had been a tiny baby boy. She held him, looking down and marveling at how much he looked like Trent. Little Shyann cooed to her baby brother and giggled when his eyes went wide and he looked her way.

She stared at blackness, wishing she could see the joy and love in Trent’s eyes. He wanted another baby because he had so much love to give. More than once, she’d heard him say Family is life, life is family.

She tried to see the baby’s face again but couldn’t. It must have been a dream, or a vision?

Before, she’d been so afraid to even think about expanding their family. Now she held onto that lifeline, that possibility that there was more for them. They had a future. Molly had to believe that.

She listened as intently as she could. She thought she heard wind or rain at one point. Occasionally there was a loud, grating noise off in the distance that she couldn’t place, even though it seemed familiar. Her mind still felt foggy.

She knew for certain she was locked in a small, musty room…possibly left for dead. She had lived in darkness for however long she’d been here…and she wasn’t sure how long that was.

It felt like years–maybe it was hours? A day? Maybe two?

She finally remembered how she got here, but knowing was almost worse.

Wait, was that footsteps? It was more like a shuffle.

She lost the noise under the thumping of her heart.

A loud click, then sliding metal.

The door opened and light flooded in. Molly blinked at the bright assault, then realized it was only a soft lamp, a small camping light perhaps.

A man stepped through the doorway and set the small lamp on a table. His form was hidden underneath a thick, long coat. He wore a ski mask. In the orange, dim light, she couldn't even make out his eye color.

She didn't look long. She dropped her gaze and turned halfway away, just as she caught the scent of cigar. It wasn’t the pleasant smell of some cigars. Instead it stank like cigarettes, but not exactly. It was strong like he smoked five packs a day.

She prayed he didn’t come any closer. She hadn’t been left for dead, but was this worse? Why was he here? What were his intentions?

She had bolted up at his intrusion and now tried to lean away, toward the wall behind her, and curl into herself. She pulled her knees up under the blanket.

Did the mask mean he didn’t plan to kill her? A serial killer wouldn’t hide his face.

If only she had searched the room for something to defend herself. She had felt her way around to orientate herself. Now it was too late…

“You can keep this light if you behave and stay quiet, alright?”

She glanced at the light. Behave? She shuddered, hot panic rising up her limbs.

“Alright?”

Molly nodded, head tilted away, her hair falling forward to cover her face.
